Writing in Public - What Happened?

Michael Salsbury
Almost a year ago, I decided to mimic the Writing in Public series of blog posts that author Dean Wesley Smith has been doing for over two years now.  I thought it might motivate me to write more if I knew that my success or failure to write was public - and that people I knew (and didn't know) would hold me accountable.

For a while, that illusion of accountability helped.  I managed to write over 300,000 words.  That's probably more than I had written in any prior year.  So Smith's idea definitely helped me.
The problem, though is something Stephen Guise mentions in his Mini Habits book.  Motivation can make us do amazing things, and amazing amounts of work in a short time.  But motivation is fleeting.  We can be highly motivated today, and totally unmotivated for six months.  Relying on motivation or inspiration to build a writing career is futile.  It's not consistent enough.  If you have actually looked at my writing statistics for the past year, you'll see evidence of that.

Guise suggests that habit is a better foundation, and I think he's right.  Forcing yourself to sit down every night and write as much as you possibly can will only work to a point.  Eventually, you'll grow tired of the activity and the desire to do almost anything else will win out.  That's what started to happen to me in August and September.

My current "mini habits" have scaled down to these two:

  • I will sit at my keyboard for one minute each night, even if I do not write a word.
  • I will take one minute each day and think about a novel I want to write.
What you're reading now is my "one minute at the keyboard" for today.  I've been at this far longer than a minute, but the mini-habit is a success for today.  When I publish this post, I'll put in that one minute of brainstorming about the novel I plan to write for NaNoWriMo next month.  I might jot down notes, or I might simply read over notes I've already made, but I'll put in my minute.

So, from here on out, no posts about word counts.  No posts about why I didn't write anything.  In other words, while I am grateful to Dean Wesley Smith for having motivated me to write over 300,000 words over the past year, I'm falling off that particular wagon.  I need to make my writing a habit.  I hope you will wish me luck and success, as I do for anyone reading this post.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 10, Days 8-13

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

Output for this six day period included 1,853 words of journal entries and a single 816 word post for Columbus Beer Scene about a tour we took of Rivertown Brewery in Cincinnati.

That's 2,669 words (plus the 50 words here) for a total of 2,719 words for the 6-day period.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 10, Days 1-7

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

After an abysmal August performance, September isn't turning out a lot better at the start.

During the first week of the month, I wrote three posts for the Begin Brewing blog that totaled 4,033 words, a post for Columbus Beer Scene that was 208 words, and the opening page of a possible story that was 398 words.  Plus this post (70 words).

That's a first week total of 4,709 words.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 9, Days 24-31

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

My performance in August was the worst of the entire challenge.  My total word count for the month was 13,530 words - an average of 436.5 per day for the entire month.

I could certainly make excuses.  My wife was injured and needed my help for a while.  Things at work were unusually busy, and I put in a lot of extra hours.  Ultimately, though, I just didn't motivate myself to write.

So below is how everything worked out for August 2015.

Writing in Public- Year 1, Month 9, Days 17-23

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

For the last two weeks, my word count has been way, way down.  Month to date, it's been under 10,000 words.  This week didn't help matters any.

At the office, it was a very busy week.  There were lots of security patches to push out.  There were updates to deploy.  There were projects to move forward and projects that popped up to trump the ones I'd been working on earlier in the week.  Most evenings I came home exhausted not feeling much like writing.  I suppose some of the professional authors out there would sympathize and say they've been through this, too.  Others would chastise me for not taking the writing seriously and moving forward with it whether I was tired or not. So be it.

When the weekend rolled around, some out-of-town family members arrived.  We spent as much time with them as we could, because we don't see them as often as we'd like.  So much of the weekend was spent away from the house and away from the computer.  Even the times were were home included a bit of entertaining of the family.  I'm not complaining about the family time, just saying that it displaced the time I often spend writing.

I've also spent a fair amount of time with a home brewing gadget I acquired, trying to understand if the gadget had problems or if I simply had higher expectations than it could deliver.  I still don't have the answer to that question.

So here it is Sunday night and I've written about 1,200 words this week, including this post.  I do have some ideas for future posts, but ideas aren't written words.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 9, Days 10-16

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

Monday I stayed home to help get my wife to her doctor appointment and to assist her around the house.  Her accident last Saturday left her with her dominant arm in a sling and in need of help with many ordinary tasks without extreme pain.  Fortunately, we learned that nothing seems to be broken or seriously damaged.

At the office, this was an incredibly taxing week for me.  Adobe released a Flash Player update.  Microsoft released its usual monthly patch workload.  I've also had to assist in budgeting efforts around an application virtualization effort I'm responsible for completing by year-end.  The stress level was such that I simply didn't have the mental energy to write most of the week.

I spent a lot of time Friday and Saturday night unwinding.  I played some of the downloadable content for Fallout: New Vegas that I'd purchased a long time ago and never played.  The writers, artists, and voice actors in that content did some impressive work.  I really enjoyed the "Big MT" content.  I'm currently working on the "Sierra Madre" part.

On Sunday afternoon, I finished a couple of articles for the Begin Brewing blog.  I also pulled out the Grainfather all-grain brewing device to finish setting it up, cleaning it, and testing it.  The test was a success in that I learned more about how it works, how to use it, etc.  It failed in that I discovered what is either a defect in my device or a misunderstanding in how to use it.  This became the material behind a 1600-word post for Begin Brewing.  That made for a 3,371 word day.

My weekly total was a disappointing 4,675 words.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 9, Days 1-9

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

I've been managing at least 31,000 words written per month now since February.  My output in February, March, and April was the highest, working out to approximately 1500-1800 words on average per day.  Since then, the per-day value has been closer to 1,200.

Saturday and Sunday were spent with family and friends, and I didn't carve out time for writing.

On Monday evening, I wrote last week's summary and the July 2015 overall summary for this series of blog posts (275 words).

Tuesday it was grass-cutting time.  I came in after that and wrote a post for Columbus Beer Scene (780 words), a post for this site (383 words),

Wednesday, I wrote a post for Columbus Beer scene (518 words) and a journal entry (438 words).  I also added a few breweries to the Ohio Brewery List on Columbus Beer Scene (unknown word count).

On Thursday, I received my Grainfather brewing system and wrote about that for Begin Brewing (1,460 words).

Friday, no writing was done.

Saturday, I read this quote:
Excellence comes from consistent improvement. Dedication to preparation and practice yields increased excellence. Perfection cannot even be defined, let alone achieved.
Being a bit of a perfectionist, this resonated with me.

Saturday afternoon, my wife had an accident and was injured.  I spent much of the weekend helping her and getting the house in order, so no writing was done either Saturday or Sunday.

My total for the 9-day period was a disappointing 4,630 words or an average of 514.4 words per day.

Writing in Public - Year 1, Month 8, Days 27-31

Michael Salsbury

My adoption of Dean Wesley Smith's Writing in Public challenge continues.

Last week, I managed over 10,000 words.  That's better than I've done for a while, though not as high as I'd been doing in March and April.

On Monday, I wrote two posts for Begin Brewing (624 words), a post for Columbus Beer Scene (393 words), 7 opening lines (229 words), and a journal entry (664 words) for a total of 1,910 words for the day.  Keeping that up would be good.

On Tuesday, I wrote a post for Introduction to Application Repackaging (920 words) about something I'd experienced at work on Monday.  I also wrote a journal entry about the day (410 words).  I ended the day by writing a post about security for the Windows Desktop Administration blog (629 words).  That generated 1,959 words for the day.

Wednesday I managed only a journal entry (530 words).

Thursday a journal entry (309 words) and 7 more opening lines (262 words) for a total of 571 words.

Friday we went to the Dublin Irish Festival.  Saturday we went on a tour with Columbus Brew Adventures (which will be written about on Columbus Beer Scene eventually) and helped a family member move into a new apartment.  Sunday we attended a family event and I bottled a batch of beer.  No writing was accomplished any of those days.

This made my total output for the week 4,970 words.  For the month of July, a total of 36,992 words.  My output for July was only slightly higher on a words-per-day or total-word basis.  Of the 36,992 words, 10,458 were fiction, 8,319 were journal entries, 825 were notes for future use, and the rest (17,390 words) were blog posts.
