As discussed in this article, certain members of Congress (who happen to be in AccuWeather's home state) are trying to shut down the transmission of weather information by The National Weather Service because it competes with their (for pay) service (and doesn't charge). On the one hand, I am opposed to the idea of the government providing services using our tax dollars that private industry can provide just as well. On the other hand, this looks like a thinly-veiled attempt to protect the money-making ability of the AccuWeather service. Specifically the Accuweather folks appear to be upset by the fact that hobbyists have made the National Weather Service forecasts available free on the web, via cell-phone, etc., services for which AccuWeather and others charge a fee (and in my opinion as a Sprint customer, a much too hefty fee) to access. This is yet another example of companies bullying the government for unnecessary legislation to protect their profit margins.
